You Haven’t Failed, You Just Haven’t Chosen It Yet.

This post is pulled from a recent coaching call with my group coaching clients about starting over and how to know if you’ve actually failed. I was teaching them the difference between quitting and pausing, and how to recognize the moment when you’re finally ready to lock in instead of just trying again.

We talked about why so many women start something, stop, and then quietly make that mean something about who they are.

This short clip comes from that conversation, where we were talking about the idea that “starting over” isn’t the problem… staying stopped is.

Here’s the bigger point that came out of that conversation.

Starting Over Isn’t Failure.

There’s a story a lot of women carry that sounds like this: “I can never stick to anything.” It usually shows up after they’ve started something with good intentions, followed through for a few weeks, and then stepped away when life got busy or the excitement wore off. When they try again later, that previous stop becomes evidence and sometimes it turns into a label.

But starting over is not wrong, it’s not the problem.

If you were truly done, you wouldn’t circle back and you wouldn’t re-download the plan. You wouldn’t think about it at random moments during the week and you wouldn’t feel that quiet pull to try again.

The fact that you return to it says more about you than the fact that you paused.

You Didn’t Fail. You Paused at the Lesson.

Most of the time, what we call “failing” is actually stepping out at the exact point where the work shifts from exciting to uncomfortable.

The beginning of anything feels fresh because there’s clarity, momentum and excitement. But eventually, it becomes repetitive, inconvenient and it requires you to follow through even when you don’t feel like it… That’s usually where people stop.

Not because they’re incapable or because the method doesn’t work, but because there is still a lesson in that space they haven’t fully absorbed yet.

Maybe it’s the lesson of keeping a promise when no one is watching.

Maybe it’s learning that boredom doesn’t mean something is wrong.

Maybe it’s realizing that discomfort isn’t a red flag, it’s part of growth.

The Lesson Always Comes Before the Result

Most people want the result to prove they’re capable but the result is never what changes you, the lesson does.

The lesson is learning to stay when it’s boring.

The lesson is following through when it’s inconvenient.

The lesson is realizing that discomfort isn’t a sign to quit, it’s a sign you’ve reached the growth point.

And until that lesson lands, you’ll keep circling back to the same starting line.

What actually changes everything isn’t better timing or a surge of motivation. It’s the moment you decide there is no out, when “I’ll try” turns into “no matter what.

That decision doesn’t mean the work gets easier, it means the debate disappears. You may still feel tired, you may still have inconvenient days, but whether you show up is no longer up for discussion.

You’re Closer Than You Think

If you’ve started over more than once, that doesn’t mean you’re broken…

It means you’re still in the process of deciding. You’re still learning, and that’s okay! You’re closer than you think.

When you are truly ready to lock in (not just try again, but actually transform), you’ll know. And when that moment comes, there’s a place for you to do that work for real.
