I ran 19 miles this morning… and yes, it is as crazy as it sounds. Marathon training is obviously in full effect and completely kickin’ my butt. A few days ago I found myself complaining about how I’m failing at this “training thing”: for the past several weeks I’ve BARELY finished my long runs, I’m having lots of aches and pains all over my body… running issues galore… you can see most of it documented in my Marathon Training Vlogs on my YouTube channel.
Anyway, I usually start pretty strong but by the time I hit mile 10-12 I start falling apart. I hate it. I was secretly dreading my long run this morning but much to my surprise it went well. Like, really well.
I only had two miles ahead of me and when I looked at my timer I thought, I’m already here!? Great! Gotta’ keep going. It was the best surprise. Throughout the entire run I was focused on my form, the beautiful scenery, my breath, filming for my vlog and making sure I kept to my RUN/WALK schedule (running for 2 minutes, 30 seconds then walking for 1 minute. Repeat a million times)… I was so focused on all of those things that I actually finished the run with enough physical and mental energy to chase my tiny niece around a park a few moments later!
Considering I almost couldn’t walk to my car after a 17 mile run a few weeks ago, this was a big change, improvement, achievement or whatever you want to call it, I was so surprised, happy and proud. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still in pain, I currently dislike stairs and I have ice packs over both of my knees but still. This is an improvement.
I’m writing this to remind myself that what I did this morning… is exactly what I need to keep doing with my work. Stop freaking out about the overwhelming big picture items and focus on the day-to-day actions that will get me where I want to be. Focus and do the work. Before I know it I’ll look up and say I’m already here!? Great! Gotta’ keep going.
Because let’s be real, in the world of creativity, business and running, you’re never really done. You just gotta’ keep going.
